Mike Stanley won in FSAE, Brian Karwan won in SMF in his first appearance at the Solo Nationals, and Sam Strano won (again) in F Stock. Well, Brian is just a "Class Winner" since SMF is still in the inception phase (even though there were more competitors than A Stock ... and that's all I have to say about that).<br /><br />More details and photos to come. Probably more on the photo side.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182404746466156132.post-32197710500392992032010-09-10T07:53:00.004-04:002010-09-10T08:22:07.006-04:00Solo Nationals Report from ThursdayAfter being shutout from Tuesday-Wednesday competition, Autocrossers, Inc., members are finally making some noise. Sam Strano is leading F Stock with the 4-5-6 trophy spots occupied by Jason Hopenprayer, Lee Piccione and Big Mike Snyder. Wow, it's like FedEx Field has moved halfway across the country! (And gotten really flat and a lot more grippy.)<br /><br />As for the rest of the WDCR members, Mike and Mike with the University of Maryland FSAE car are puttin' a hurtin' on the rest of the competition. Stanley leads Cook by 0.902, and Cook is ahead of his next closest rival by 1.6 seconds.<br /><br />Brian Karwan has almost a two tenths lead in the SMurF class. Nobody knows who that is in the faaaaassssssssssst little white Civic except us. Hopefully he can keep it up on Friday.<br /><br />Brian was running in the third heat on the west course on Thursday, and it was interesting because there were three other WDCR members in the same heat. Learic Cramer and Holly Schwedler came through on their final runs to move into second place in C Stock Ladies and F Stock Ladies, respectively. Learic is two tenths out of first while Holly is three tenths out, so both of them definitely have a shot on Friday. Jason Baker was also running in that same heat and after hitting multiple cones on his first two runs, he pulled out a clean run to move his BMW M Coupe into 12th place in Super Street Modified. There is A LOT of firepower in that class.<br /><br /><br />Speaking of firepower, in ASP, Courtney Cormier is in a trophy spot in fifth place but coned a run that would have had him in second behind his co-driver, Junior Johnson. ASP ran in drizzling conditions that had most of them running about a second off their faster times on their third runs.<br /><br />In C Stock, the Robeson-Thomas Mazda RX-8 is attracting attention from the cones, but I think both of them are just happy to be driving after 2-3 days of sitting around and watching everybody else drive.<br /><br />Don't forget, things kick off Friday at 9 a.m. EST, and you can keep track of the action at <a href="http://sololive.scca.com/">http://sololive.scca.com</a>. Results have been posted in near-real time -- many competitors can be seen in grid staring intensely at their phones as they figure out where they are standing in class.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182404746466156132.post-32388575759535732382010-08-29T22:11:00.004-04:002010-08-30T00:05:46.877-04:00WDCR Solo Nats F125 Injury ReportThere are less than 10 days left before the F125 class takes on some evil course designers in Lincoln. What's better than reporting on the currently injuries/disabled news for the F125 National participants? Here is the latest:<div><br /></div><div>Mike Kline - <b>Fear of commitment and predicted overdose.</b> Mike is having trouble committing to his new kart, and the predicted Sonics overdose on the way to Lincoln is a foregone conclusion. (Same goes for Josh Luster, those dudes need some serious help) Mike is still wishy washy on whose kart to drive, just like any politician.</div><div><br /></div><div>Justin Neal - <b>Suffering from power hungry symptoms and mounting problem. </b> After I've been telling him all year that he has a horsepower problem, it took a broken motor mount before Justin realized his motor is underpowered compare with others. Now he is power hungry and looking for a mount, just like any politician.</div><div><br /></div><div>Edwin Liu - <b>"Over worked" and completely lack of focus. </b> Edwin has been using "working" as an excuse to miss the last 2 1/2 karting events. But the reality is he has been playing Starcraft 2 instead of "working". It doesn't stop Edwin though: He won every race he entered after he stopped karting regularly. Saying one thing and does the other, just like any politician.</div><div><br /></div><div>Lisa Garfield - <b>"Oh, it's a small leak".</b> It starts out from a simple sentence from Marshall Cone: "Lisa, your spindle is loose". It leads to replacement of a spindle, which leads to a seized front brake caliper, followed by a rear brake bleeding disaster, then turned into a completely corner weighing problem, which resulted to a four hour camber/caster/toe/camber/caster/toe camber/caster/toe/camber/caster/toe/camber/caster/toe adjustment session, then leads to a disastrous ride height adjustment session which leads to a busted spindle bearing on the side of the spindle that was working. This finally ended with Brian to announce: "I want my life back".</div><div>(No politician reference needed on this one)</div><div><br /></div><div>Brian Garfield - <b>"Suffered injuries that can't not be disclosed in public". </b>This afternoon, Brian suffered an injury that we can not disclose in public. I can only summed up as a "typical politician injury".</div><div><br /></div><div>Danny Kao - <b>Always go left, having problem turning right. </b> Danny is suffering a tweaked chassis so he can turn left very easily, but impossible to turn right. It's kind of fixed, but now my front end is all crooked it. Well, just like any politician.</div><div><br /></div><div>This concludes the F125 injury/disabled report.</div><div><br /></div><div>Danny Kao, WDCRSoloNats News.</div>Danny Kaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06036730253385300156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182404746466156132.post-2138960119759005512010-08-11T10:52:00.009-04:002010-08-31T08:50:35.956-04:00Back again for 2010The troop of bloggers will be back again this year to post the shenanigans and other important stuff from the Solo Nationals in Lincoln, Neb. The details of the last day is getting a little fuzzy because again, my old age. But here is what happened as I remembered it:</div><div><br /><div></div><div>6:40am - Neary was completely surprised that Brian Burdette was already of out the hotel and walking the courses, and he was even more surprised that I am in the lobby on time for a change.</div><div><br /></div><div>7:00am - Picked at Craig at the hotel and he was bragging about holding up to his end of the bargain yesterday (last place in STU), and his physical prowless that he swam a grand total of two laps last night in a 10 meter pool in the hotel.</div><div><br /></div><div>8:00am - After walking the course, the 1st heat started on time. Burdette was facing tough competition from Mark Madarash and Greg McCance and ended up 5th. Katie and Learic drove hard but didn't trophy; and Shawn was being Camera shy for some reason.</div><div><br /></div><div>10:00am - F125 race was a bit fuzzy. Mainly because I drove like crap. Old age and high blood pressure are impeding my ability to remember. But here is what happened:</div><div><br /></div><div>Edwin drove the wheel off! I meant really, he drove the wheel off. Edwin's front spindle had a hairline crack and it finally snapped off during his first run in the fastest section. When I saw Shane, Justin and Edwin pushing the kart back on three wheels, I know it didn't look good. Now Edwin is offically in the "drove the wheel off club" with me, Lisa and Kline. (Which is not the same club as "driving into the pole" like Don Miller and someone who will remain anonymous)</div><div><br /></div><div>Mike McClintock and Eric Clement immediately offered Edwin and Justin co-drives. These guys in F125 are so cool! Justin ended up finished in 9th, exactly like I predicted it; and Edwin finished in 17th, one off my prediction.</div><div><br /></div><div>Mike Kline showed up in the morning whinning about cracked ribs and banged up shoulder, definitely showing the sympton of KC disease. I told him my "Danny the Greek" reputation has to stay intact and told him to suck it up and drive; but after making faces like someone punched him in the stomach for the next hour, Mike ended up in 12th. Good try Mike, but I am sending him to the Double AA farm autocross team in the Taiwan until he improves.</div><div><br /></div><div>Frank Weichold is bitching about how suck my kart is: it doesn't brake, it doesn't shift, and it doesn't turn. I got mad to told him that he sucks and he doesn't know who to drive and I will show him how good my kart is. After I got back from my first run, I was bitching to Frank how suck my kart is: it doesn't brake, it doesn't shift, and it doesn't turn; Frank proceded to told me I sucked. I finished 16th and Frank finished 21st. It's a good thing we didn't bet dinner again.</div><div><br /></div><div>The only positive thing about me sucking is I easily managed to give Brian a nice rerun, and I am still expecting my $50 payment arriving in the mail. Brian had a good driving day and finished just behind the flying Paul Russell and fastest kid in the country, JT McClintock. Brian bettered my prediction by one spot by making Kline do 25% of the work. Next year Kline might have to do 100% of work since now the system is working.</div><div><br /></div><div>I think all the karters had a great time. I wished Kline could be a little better, but we lived up to "my" expectation and hopefully everybody elses...</div><div><br /></div><div>Noon: Justin and Edwin went out to get a sandwich from KFC and asked me if I need anything, and I told them a couple of original pieces will be good. Jane and Kline went to to get pizza and asked me if I need anything, and I told them I will take a slice. In about an hour, I got a bucket full of chicken, 3 pizzas and and a bunch of cookies. Didn't they know I already gain 5 lbs this week?</div><div><br /></div><div>2:00 pm: After some frantic packing to avoid the rain storm, I put on my team jersey and checked out STU in action. F-Stock National Champion, Mr. Sam Strano came by and gave my teammates some advice: he told Craig there is no hope, then he told Neary there is no hope. I thought that was some sound advice. Then Sam mumbled something to me but I was too pre-occupied to hear what he was saying. Here is a picture after Sam talked to Neary and me.</div></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2563/3918330661_8bb460f7ed.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 333px;" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2563/3918330661_8bb460f7ed.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><br /><div>STU race started soon after. Craig quickly jumped into the 2nd place (from the last), but surprisingly clean. Josh drove like he was in a sea of piranhas and completely stayed of from the cones. Neary drove hard, but the California Wing Monster was just a little faster. At the end, Neary coned away from a 7th and finish 10th. Josh finished just above mid-pack, and Craig finished in 3rd (from the last) place.</div><div><br /></div><div>3:30pm - I quickly hustled to the west course to check out Lisa in action. Lisa was lounging around like she is Cleopatra, so I guess Brian would be Richard Burton holding the umbrella and fanning the queen. (For you kids who didn't know who Richard Burton is, don't feel bad; you have to be Craig's age to know who he is) The F125L race was very intense. Lisa was holding in 2nd spot for most of the race, but the little Mohawk lady just edge Lisa with the last run. :(</div><div><br /></div><div>5:00pm - A mad dash to beat the rain forced us to do some serious packing. We managed to snap a group pictures with some quick thinking from Shane, and for some strange reason I had an overwhelming urge of eating carrots when the picture was taken.</div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2631/3929329163_e78630636a_b.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 1024px; height: 768px;" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2631/3929329163_e78630636a_b.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /></div><div><br /></div><div> </div><div>7:00pm - Solo Banquet was more interesting than last year and Wednesday because we goofed on a "Corn Hat" for quite sometime. The guys that trophied on Friday are:</div><div><br /></div><div>Karen Kraus - 1st ESPL</div><div>Brian Garfield - 3rd F125</div><div>Ian Baker - 3rd STS</div><div>Brian Burdette - 5th ESP</div><div>Mike Neary - 10th STU</div><div>Eric Krimelmeyer - 15th AS</div><div><br /></div><div>And,</div><div><br /></div><div>Edwin Liu - One broken spindle.</div><div>Danny Kao - 10 pieces of chicken, 9 slices of pizza, 4 cookies all in the 4 o'clock hour.</div><div>Mike Kline - One bruise rib, one busted shoulder.</div><div>Josh Luster - A clean STI.</div><div><br /></div><div>This wraps up the last day of Solo Nationals activities. A big final report will be up in the next few days where all WDCR participants will be interviewed. That blog should hit the stands before the 1st snow. Tata for now...</div><div> </div>Danny Kaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06036730253385300156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182404746466156132.post-39275593445562404332009-09-10T23:06:00.003-04:002009-09-11T00:39:04.784-04:001st day of the Solo Nationals Part 2Nice weather dominated the 1st day of the 2nd leg of the Solo Nationals. Rain is in the forecast tomorrow, but we were treated with a beautiful day. The results were a little less than ideal, however.<br /><br />Let's start with our region members first:<br /><br />Clyde Caplan - 30th, celebrated by eating a whole bunch of ice cream after dinner.<br /><br />Brendon Bengermino - 18th. Got stuck eating ice cream with Clyde, but he did make Clyde cleaning up a bunch of OPR (Other People's Rubber).<br /><br />Eric Kriemelmeyer - 13th. Eric is the trophy spot, even though I thought he was going to be in the top three.<br /><br />Shawn Roberts - 21st. Probably something wrong with the car. <br /><br />Chike Dellimore - 19th. Ditto, Chike also should be faster.<br /><br />Katie Orgler - Katie is hiding somewhere in Lincoln. I have seen her all week but Shawn told me she is here. Where is Katie?<br /><br />Learic Cramer - Don't know where Learic finished today, but saw her walking the West course with determination so she must be in contention.<br /><br />Brian Burdette - 5th so far. Brian cut me a break by not giving me a parking ticket due to a quick tire change. More on that later.<br /><br />Pat Griffith - 18th. I saw Pat interviewed Julian for Sportscar, but he didn't interview Julian's agent (me). Doesn't Pat know the agent always get interviewed first and take 10% of all Julian's winnings? <br /><br />Lisa Garfield (2nd), Brian Garfield (4th), Mike Kline (8th), Justin Neal (10th), Danny Kao (13th), Edwin Liu (16th), Frank Weichold (18th ). More on this motley crew later.<br /><br />Ian Baker - I think Ian is in 6th.<br /><br />Jim Sykes - I think Jim is somewhere between 15th to 20th.<br /><br />Mike Neary - 12th and Craig Garfield is in 46th. More on that later.<br /><br />John Willemin - 28th, Shane Chinonn-Rhoden - 13th. Both know who uncle Frank is and Shane is officially the nicest Irish guy in Nebraska - the title I am have held for almost a week given by Jason Becker.<br /><br />This is what I saw today:<br /><br />Both Neary and Eric were amazed that I poured sausage gravy over a bagel and eat it for breakfast; good thing they weren't here last Saturday where I poured gravy over chocolate scones, and gravy over chocolate danish last Sunday.<br /><br />This is the 10th day in the row that I got up before 7am. Haven't done that since high school.<br /><br />I missed Brian Burdette's group and Chike's group. Figuring out what jet to use in Nebraska is a pure guessing game.<br /><br />F125 race was a lot of fun, and it went by really fast. I wasn't able to shoot Justin's stomach in time and he is in 10th place and .5 second ahead of me. Frank wasn't able to keep up with Edwin either so the old guys have to buy the young bucks dinner. Before you know it, all the 20-year olds from DC and Finger Lakes region were expecting us old losers to pay. So Uncle Frank treat them a very nice meal at Laslos. Laslos is a great restaurant and the food is delicious. I am definitely going back there again next year.<br /><br />BTW, you should see how fast John and Shane can move after they find out they are getting free dinner from uncle Frank. If they keep that up tomorrow they will both be National Champions.<br /><br />All the hard manual labor that Brian made Kline do finally showed some signs that it's working. Brian is finally on top again over Kline by over a second, and loosen the rear track bar between runs to make Kline spins also worked.<br /><br />Lisa is within striking distance of the National Championship and is 0.8 second back. In fact, I will be leading in the F125 ladies group with my excellent performance. I will be one ugly lady though.<br /><br />Here is what happened in the STU race:<br /><br />Neary put the left front tire to the rear right and vise versa, resulted in two directional tires point at the wrong direction. I thought that was a Steve Yang only special, but I think Neary is finally showing the sign of old age.<br /><br />Here is a conversation between Craig and I:<br /><br />(After Craig's first run, 63.xxx plus one cone)<br /><br />Craig: I got to keep it clean, Brian told me to keep it clean.<br /><br />Me: Don't worry about it Craig, just drive hard.<br /><br />(After Craig's 2nd run, 63.xxx plus two cones)<br /><br />Craig: I got to keep it clean, Brian told me to keep it clean.<br /><br />Me: Don't worry about it Craig, just drive hard.<br /><br />(After Craig's 3rd run, 65xxx clean but slower than the 1st run with penalty)<br /><br />Craig: I got a clean run!<br /><br />Me: But you forgot to drive hard.<br /><br />Another conversation between Craig and Neary:<br /><br />Neary: Did you know there hasn't been a single time that the co-drivers finished in first and last place at the Nationals? We will make history his weekend.<br /><br />Craig: (After the STU race) Well Neary, I kept my end of the bargain...<br /><br />It might rain tomorrow so that whole STU could be shuffled upside down. I have seen Craig driving in the rain and his rain time is faster than his dry time, so we will see....<br /><br />Here is a conversation between me, Julian, and Sam during my course walk and Julian is giving me pointers:<br /><br />Sam: We all should be getting tips from Julian.<br /><br />Julian: Not really, you are still "a little" faster.<br /><br />Me: But I get advice from Julian because he will still do it for Ice Cream.<br /><br />Sam: What do you think I have been getting for my advice all these years?<br /><br />Last but not least. Now I am officially boycutting all Bridgestone tires. As some of you know I have been scamming to get a free t-shirt from Bridgestone but not successful, and here is what happen today:<br /><br />Neary said to Bridgestone guy: Dude, can I get some air for my tires.<br /><br />Bridgestone guy: Sure, but you should be running Bridgestones instead of Dunlaps.<br /><br />Neary: But the car owner wouldn't let me because you are not giving him a free t-shirt.<br /><br />Bridgestone guy: We give free t-shirts to everybody. Take a couple, just don't give to the car owner.<br /><br />So that did it! I am officially boycutting all Bridgestone products for EVER!!!!<br /><br />Unless if it rains tomorrow, then my boycutt is over because I need my Bridgestone rains.<br /><br />I am sure we will collectively post lots of National pictures soon. Signing off...<br /><br />Can you believe it will be 11 days in the row that I got up before 7am? It's cramping my style...Danny Kaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06036730253385300156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182404746466156132.post-1767609877638946582009-09-09T22:58:00.003-04:002009-09-10T00:13:07.311-04:00Day 2 of Solo NationalsMother nature was kind to someone, and unkind to someone else. I think John Vitamvas and Greg Olsen got the mother mad somehow and they were punished. <br /><br />Both John and Greg were in contention for trophy spots. But since their numbers are 98 and 198, they were gridded on the back of the pack. Shortly after the first 7 - 8 Super Stocks took off, the sky opened up and the course immediately became a lake. Many big favorites in SS and SSM were knocked off the contention as these cars were hopeless with rain tires and big power. <br /><br />That's autocross - it doesn't happen often, but sometime being lucky is better than good.<br /><br />Overall, the first leg of the Solo Nationals were so-so for our region. The two shoot-ins, Sam and Julian, repeated as National Champion. But Sam had a scare and won by just 0.070 over the 2nd place. In F-Stock, Lee Piccione finished a good 3rd and big Mike Synder finished 8th and grab the last trophy spot.<br /><br />In FJB, Julian won easily over Carson and became a two time National Champion. Carson had two DNFs and battled kart problems all week; but finally put in a clean run and secure 2nd place.<br /><br />In ESL, Carrie Synder had the fastest second day time in her class, but wasn't enough to cover the spread from the 1st day. I think eating only onion rings for dinner helped.<br /><br />In SSM, Jason drove hard and beat the mother nature with a 6th place trophy finish. Congratulations Jason! Now you are the nicest Irishman in Nebraska.<br /><br />In Formula SAE, the battle between University of Maryland, University of Texas, and University of Kansas were fierce. Mike Stanley and Mike Cook drive their lights out and employed all kinds of tire changing strategies during the rain storm including:<br /><ul><li>Went to the Hoosier tent and try to buy new rain tires, but Hoosiers doesn't have them in stock.</li><li>Went to the Bridgestone tent; since they can't even give me a free t-shirt, they have no tire for FSAE either.</li><li>Recruit cheap/free labor from former Maryland and University of Delaware students, and a crazy German as pit crew, and show them how to change tires in 10 minutes.</li><li>Run the first session with 4 rain tires, 2nd session with 2 rains on the left side and 2 drys on the right, and 4 drys in the third session. This is what they teach in college nowadays...<br /></li></ul>In the end, Mike Stanley finish in 3rd place, 0.173 second behind the winner, and 0.172 second behind the 2nd place. Kansas lost the National Championship by 0.001 second to Texas. Mike Cook finished in 5th place. Both FSAE guys were not at the trophy presentation and folks were asking me if they had to go back to school so they won't miss any classes. I told me that's impossible: I went to Maryland, and I never showed up for classes.<br /><br />I also stick around and watch my friends Brian Ciarlei and Michelle Quinn in FM and FML. Sal DiPompo from the Philly region took 1st in FM. Sunday was Sal's first time driving the FM car that won his Nationals, and Sal has only been autocrossing for two years. Brian finished 3rd and Michelle finished 2nd. The combined ages of all three are still younger than Craig. So for you folks that are my age or older: there is no hope for you, please join me for Bocci ball during the off season where the competition is kind of fierce too.<br /><br />This wrapped up the competition news. Here is what else is going on today at Lincoln:<br /><br />The F125 newbies spent the day running their karts in the rain; in the only rain we have seen all week, and they are not even running for competition. I am beginning to think people are out of their mind to run in F125s.<br /><br />Early this week my attempt to get a free Bridgestone shirt was denied when I brought the future F1 star to seek for sponsorship. Today I went to the Bridgestone tent with an old-timer from the Central PA region and carried two Bridgestone tires in hand and try to con the rep for shirts, but I was denied again. I was going to accuse the Bridgestone guys for being bias again the Asians, but since Bridgestone is a Japanese company, I can't even do that. I think they just hate me.<br /><br />Jim Sykes is now officially being sponsored by the SCCA, as he gets free entries to run in the Nationals for just being him. I saw Jim hotdoggin in the ProSolo Finale Champion's car, Jim's man!<br /><br />Neary, my number one horse, run a 45.8 at the test and tune course today; and Craig, my number two donkey, run a 45.0 at the test and tune course yesterday. I don't know what to make of this, and Craig is now insisted that he is the number one driver and is demanding Neary's contract. I gladly offered to Craig - now Craig needs to change tires and wash the car plus buying me team t-shirt at Walmart.<br /><br />Let me list a couple of things that normally doesn't happen in our events:<br /><br />1. The traditional CP parade, where CP cars parade around the course, was substituted by the "CP BUS" parade. I rather sit in Dave Mapes CP car parading around like a Zebra than a bus any day.<br /><br />2. The Solo banquet was held at the Embassy Suites hotel's ball room. Half of the chairs were facing the opposite direction of the trophy presentation. I guess since half of the guys are PO'd because they didn't win anything, they were giving the opportunity not to look at the winners.<br /><br />This wraps up the first leg of the Solo Nationals. Tomorrow the rest of the classes will run, and I need to go to bed so I won't miss my tee-time. But here is a preview of tomorrow's festivities.<br /><br />1. Watch Jim Sykes free race.<br />2. Watch Ian collect more money, he hasn't win anything in three days.<br />3. Watch Brian Burdette's revenge on Frisbee golf.<br />4. Watch Eric Kriemelmeyer's return to the Nationals.<br />5. Watch Brendon Bengermino kick-butt in A-Stock, and watch Clyde Caplan watching Brendon Bengermino kick butt in A-Stock.<br />6. Watch Pat Griffith and Karen Kraus driving the 2nd most talked about car in ESP.<br />7. Watch Josh Luster's new Bridgestone shirt... Damn Bridgestones.<br />8. Watch Shane Chinonn-Rhoden and John Willemin in STX action, where Neary predicts Shane to be the STX National Champion this year. Since Shane is not driving his car, the chance is good.<br />9. Watch Mike Kline sleep while Brian Garfield does all the work.<br />10. Watch Lisa to return to the "No Fear" status and show the F125L who's the boss, and not just to Brian.<br />11. Watch Neary and Craig battle it out on who is the number one driver in the Evo; and...<br /><br />Watch Justin Neal and Edwin Liu team up again Frank Weichold and me on the Octogon death cage match. The total combine time of Edwin and Justin will be compared again the combine time of Frank and me. The losers buy dinner at the Mexican restaurant on the corner of 48th and P street.<br /><br />Got to go to bed now. Need a good sleep so I have a good appetite for my free dinner.Danny Kaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06036730253385300156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182404746466156132.post-50639568799456987412009-09-09T06:41:00.008-04:002009-09-09T06:56:19.368-04:00Day 1 pictures<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUJNSAPpoNa5p1hhhU5W1GGy_diht2OWwvOyCePCTs4uYvQRlys1r7HGPckFdLJer17eDj8WtEIZRhHBBzHDKfvYOtFY9Sr_ZK26_1hQoWhw5qRZMq3W-7WSkobUi1WclpP7tF0tQXmT4m/s1600-h/CAM_0023.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379417013506063090" style="WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUJNSAPpoNa5p1hhhU5W1GGy_diht2OWwvOyCePCTs4uYvQRlys1r7HGPckFdLJer17eDj8WtEIZRhHBBzHDKfvYOtFY9Sr_ZK26_1hQoWhw5qRZMq3W-7WSkobUi1WclpP7tF0tQXmT4m/s400/CAM_0023.JPG" border="0" /></a><br />Mike Snyder already looking ahead before his first run. For the accurate result, please go to SCCA.org.<br /><br />8am - Heat Zero, FJB:<br /><br />Julian and Carson Garfield, along with one other junior are the three competitors in FJB. Julian was clean on the first run, dirty on the second run and clean on the 3rd run with the best time of 61.xxx. 5 seconds ahead of Carson, who is in 2nd place with fuel starvation problem. Carson's car is, we think, fixed. But there might be a possibility that Julian and Carson will co-drive tomorrow.<br /><br />9am - ESL: (Not English as a Second Language)<br /><br />Carrie Synder is in 5th (or 6th) place and I think she is within a second of the leader. It should be pretty easy for Carrie to catch up tomorrow. (She eats onion rings like Popeye eats spinach, by the way)<br /><br />10am - Super Stock and SSM:<br /><br />John Vitamvas and Greg Olsen were co-driving John's Z06 Corvette. Greg was doing slightly better than John and I believe they are in the 10ths and 20ths, respectively. I talked to John's brother from Colorado during my work session and he mentioned John made a small mistake in each of the runs. But both are in good spirits and having a good time.<br /><br />The following conversion reflects how is Jason Becker's (SSM 25) race:<br /><br />Me: Jason, how did you do?<br /><br />Jason: Pretty well. I drove as hard as I can and ran a 58.xxx.<br /><br />Me: That's great! Where do you stand in class?<br /><br />Jason: I don't know. The 3 rotor SSM RX7 ran a 55.xxx.<br /><br />12pm - F-Stock:<br /><br />I didn't get a chance to watch F-Stock as I was working at the test and tune course while Craig destroyed every cone in sight as well as the finish. But I think Sam is in first, then Lee. Big Mike is in (6th?) Again, I am tired and not even checking the results at the SCCA site. I will leave that for you guys to find out.<br /><br />12pm - Evo School, Craig's test and tune:<br /><br />Craig took 5 runs at the Evo School test and tune. He had to stop because he got car sick. (or sick of the car, I am not sure which one) Mike "Junior" Johnson told me during the session that I can work anywhere I want because I am a friend of his, which I am honored. But he followed up by telling me not to mentioned that to anyone...<br /><br />2pm - FSAE:<br /><br />Since I worked at the FSAE heat for about three hours due to an oil spill, I had a good look at the FSAE competition. It's hard for me to admit, but Mike Stanley is a better driver than me, and he can throw frisbee longer than me, and quite a ladies man. But I still think I speak better Chinese than he does, and I weight more.<br /><br />Mike and Mike are in 2nd and 5th place. Mike had to sacrifice for Mike to make sure Mike has hot tires to work with. <br /><br />4pm - Back to the camp:<br /><br />I finally realized that Edwin, Justin, Neary, Shane, and Buttdyno are all here, and we all went to dinner afterwards as bunch of "cats". Many of us also did a course walk before dinner with Kline; Kline told me to pitch here, to pitch there, and pitch everywhere; and now I am more confused than ever.<br /><br />I had to ask Brian if I can give Lisa a hug because it is her birthday. Brian says that was pretty creepy; but I think he finally realized that giving him a hug from me for Lisa birthday will be much creepier. Happy Birthday Lisa!<br /><br />Some pictures will be uploaded at the later time because I can't even carry on a coherent conversion with my wife right now. I took a lot of pictures, including some obscene pictures of Craig and pictures of how a caveman destroys T-Bone steak. More details to follow...Danny Kaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06036730253385300156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182404746466156132.post-63928867074689893402009-09-08T00:13:00.005-04:002009-09-08T01:20:08.777-04:00Fun filled day before the Nationals<div>First of all, due to the overwhelming request of Johnny V's picture; for a limited time only, we are offering a 8x10 glassy of "Johnny Gone Solo" for a discounted price of $50. Here is a sample picture for your enjoyment:</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2545/3899519862_80545e09bf.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 416px; height: 500px;" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2545/3899519862_80545e09bf.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><div><br /></div><div>Today is really the beginning of the Solo Nationals week. This morning we were greeted by the new arrivals of Shawn, Chike, and Eric K. And if Justin and Edwin made it thru the corn fields of Iowa, we should see both of them bright and early tomorrow, and Mike Neary will make his rock star like appearance at 4pm via a Learjet.</div><div><br /></div><div>Here are a summary of highlights today:</div><div><ul><li>Courses are opened for walking. Most of the Thursday and Friday runners only walked one side of the course because they just can't remember much after 55 seconds on the course. </li><li>Tuesday and Wednesday competitors are walking the courses like mad men. They also spent hundreds of dollars on the practice course like they are in Las Vegas. Personally I think $10 plus for a 40 second run is kind of pricy, but at least no shagging cones is required.</li><li>Bread stick and sauce are only 1 dollar; best deal in town.</li><li>I bought all the 2 stroke motor oil for $8.19 a bottle on site, and I am selling them for $16 per bottle.</li><li>All the guys on the practice course forgot they were there to practice. They are all drooling over a F430 Ferrari with all carbon fiber stuff knocking over cones for some reason. This week I learned a new fact - When a Ferrari talks (exhaust note), people listen and don't mind how loud it is ever. </li><li>Disc/Frisbee golf is a dangeous sport. Brian Burdette almost committed homicide on course; Mike Stanley almost didn't live to see the age of 25; Mike Kline is now claiming disability insurance; Greg almost chop somebody's head off from 1/2 mile away, and Johnny V doesn't know how to climb trees.</li><li><a href="http://www.museumofamericanspeed.com/">The Museum of American Speed</a> is a really cool place. If you ever wonder who is the person that won because he has all the toys a man can have, that would be Mr. Bill Smith. He is one cool dude.</li></ul></div><div>The much anticipated Frisbee golf tournament took place today at 1pm. Here is the copy of the score card:</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><b>John 3. 3. 5 4. 4. 4. 4. 3. 3. 4. 4. 3. 4. 5. 3. 4 4. 4 = 68<br /><br />Kline 5. 4. 4. 3. 5. 6. 5. 3. 3. 4. 4. 3 x. x. x, x. x. x = 49<br /><br />Stanley 3. 3. 5. 3. 4 4. 3. 3. 3. 4. 4. 3. 4. 3. 3. 4. 4. 3 = 63<br /><br />Greg 2. 3. 4. 2. 4. 3. 3. 4. 2. 3. 3. 4 4. 4. 3. 3. 3. 4 = 58<br /><br />Brian 4. 5. 8. 5. 6. 6. 4. 4. 3. 6. 3. 4. 6. 5. 5. 5. 4. 4 = 89<br /><br />Dk 4. 4. 5. 3. 6. 6. 6. 4. 3. 4. 5. 5. 5. 4. 4. 5. 5. 3 = 82<br /><br />Par 2. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. 3 = 53</b></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;font-size:100%;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:13px;"><br /></span></span></div><div>The overall winner was Mike Kline with a total score of 49, but he was protested by Greg because Kline stopped at hole number 13 claiming shoulder injury. I found out the only thing I might be able to do better than Brian Burdette is Frisbee golf, and when Brian gets mad he likes to throw Mike Stanley in the creek. John V likes to park his Frisbee on the top of the trees, and Greg throws a frisbee longer than Tiger Woods hitting a golf ball, which made me feel very inadequate. </div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2633/3899554210_19d117acc9.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 375px; height: 500px;" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2633/3899554210_19d117acc9.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a></div><div>John V looking for Frisbee in the tree on Hole #5</div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2633/3899554210_19d117acc9.jpg"></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3473/3899554384_a4dbe7a986.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 375px; height: 500px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3473/3899554384_a4dbe7a986.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br />John V looks for frisbee in Hole #8</div><div><br /></div><div>This blog feels like a John V special; but I can assure you there is no man-crush or anything.</div><div><br /></div>Oh, some random cool cars I saw today:<div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3443/3899425932_5099b00e58.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 333px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3443/3899425932_5099b00e58.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2599/3898630739_e4f4a5abd9.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 333px;" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2599/3898630739_e4f4a5abd9.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2573/3898638379_34e82e02cb.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 333px;" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2573/3898638379_34e82e02cb.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2464/3899410524_b4eb2410a5.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 333px;" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2464/3899410524_b4eb2410a5.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3501/3899407664_4313f69313.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 333px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3501/3899407664_4313f69313.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Tomorrow - FJB starts at Heat 0, Super Stock, F Stock, and Formula SAE are all running. Mike Stanley already started talking smacks; but I am not worried - just because he stayed at Holiday Express last night, it doesn't really mean he can play.<br /><br />P.S. I stayed up this late because Clyde, Frank and I chit-chatted with Craig and Jane until midnight. I swear I didn't go to the "mandatory driver's meeting".<br /><br />P.P.S. So I naturally stuffed myself with them and John V's aunt's cookies all day - resulted in a weigh-in of 418 lbs. Don Miller would have appreciate this.<div><br /></div><div>This morning also started with the foggiest day ever. Or should I say Haro from Rinken.<div><br /></div><div>Yesterday's drive was exactly 20 hours for us old guys. (14 bathroom stops) I think the race to Lincoln is exactly the same as any typical autocross, except the time difference is measure in hours, not seconds.</div><div><br /></div><div>Frank Weichold and I showed up at the site on 9:40am and were greeted with a long line of cars. The gate was not opened yet and we already had over 50 trucks and trailers waiting to get it. In the lines were Sam Strano, the Garfields and Mike Kline, and Ian, Carrie and Jim Sykes. This is the equal opportunity WDCR F125/FJB classes preview where the loser (me) gets featured too:<br />
<div></div><div>In the next few days a bunch of us are leaving for Lincoln, Nebraska for the ProSolo Finale and the Solo Nationals. F125 guys, gal and FJB boys from the DC region are definitely representing: there are a total of 9 karters (6 F125s, 1 F125L, and 2 FJBs) at Lincoln spraying the course for bugs. Three towing vehicles will be towing seven karts, one Mitsubishi Evolution, and approximately 80 rims and tires for 1200 miles to Lincoln. We will probably stop for bathroom breaks for a total of 37 times. (3 times for the Ford Explorer, 4 times for the Ford Van, and 30 times for the Totota Tundra) An interesting fact: If you we move Mike Kline to the Ford Explorer, the combine ages of the passengers all three vehicle will be almost exactly the same.</div><div></div><div>Without further ado, here is your WDCR F125/F125L/FJB preview. Instead of the fastest guys first, we will feature the them by the order of age, because we all know about the "Beauty before Age" thing...</div><div></div><div></div><div><b>Carson Garfield - FJB</b></div></div><div></div><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3366/3587508754_cff9acf540.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3366/3587508754_cff9acf540.jpg" style="cursor: hand; height: 333px; width: 500px;" /></a><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
<div>Carson is one of the 5 Garfields in the Solo Nationals this year, and probably the most coordinated. If Autocross is like Guitar Hero, Carson will be the National Champion in A-Mod. In every aspect Carson is just as fast as Julian, except a little lack of experience, and he does lift unlike his lead-footed older Brother. <b>(Projected Finish: 2nd)</b></div><div></div><div></div><div><b>Julian Garfield - FJB</b></div><div></div><div><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3598/3587488852_4f869c0395.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3598/3587488852_4f869c0395.jpg" style="cursor: hand; height: 333px; width: 500px;" /></a></div><div></div><div>Julian is back to defend his FJB National Champion crown from last year, and he is the odds on favorite to repeat. Julian never lifts his throttle when he races, which kind of making him hard to beat. Plus he is on the same <a href="http://www.bellracing.com/public/index/drivers/detail/1069/">Bell Racing driver</a> listing as Carl Edwards, and we all know Carl Edwards is the best driver ever. (That <a href="http://www.scenedaily.com/news/articles/nationwideseries/Short_day_for_Carl_Edwards_Marcos_Ambrose_in_Grand-Am_Rolex_Series_race.html">little crash</a> over the weekend at the Rolax Grand-am race is just a minor glitch and we all do sometimes...) <b>(Projected Finish: 1st)</b></div><div><b><br />

</b></div><div><b>Edwin Liu - F125</b></div><div><b><br />

</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>Sporting a brand "new" 1999 CRG 125, a powerful CR125 5 Speed motor and a wierd clutch lever position, Edwin is ready for his first Solo Nationals. Edwin's racing stratgy is simple: Go as fast as he can, scream as loud as he can, and make the kart is so uncomfortable for anyone over 6 feet tall so not only his co-driver Justin will not beat him, Justin will also get a cramp on his left leg, a massive burn on right leg from the motor, bruised right elbow from hitting the exhaust, and a hand cramp from holding the shift lever. Edwin is ready to rock. <b>(Projected finish: 18th)</b></div><div></div><div></div><div><b>Justin Neal - F125</b></div><div></div><div><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3470/3829189620_e530a6dc6e.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3470/3829189620_e530a6dc6e.jpg" style="cursor: hand; height: 314px; width: 500px;" /></a></div><div></div><div>Justin "The Natural" Neal does not only know how to drive like Roy Hobbs knows how to pitch, he also gets all the girls attention like Robert Redford. The only way to stop Justin from winning a trophy from the Nationals is to secretly remove his exhaust springs, or shoot him in the stomach. Both methods have been attempted with moderate success in the last AI event. Justin is so fast, (how fast is he?) he has a bad reputation for being faster than the car/kart owner. (Several folks in the DC region also shared this bad reputation: Sam Strano, Mike Neary, Greg Olsen, Shane Chinonn-Rhoden, Darren Mass - until last weekend, and Larry Olsen - but I was told everybody is faster than Craig so Mr. Olsen's good reputation remains intact) Justin will be the biggest surprise at this year's National. <b>(Projected Finish: 9th or 19th depends on how accurate Edwin's aim is)</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b>Lisa Garfield - F125L</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b><a href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2589/3828218709_42af2d8bd7.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2589/3828218709_42af2d8bd7.jpg" style="cursor: hand; height: 333px; width: 500px;" /></a><br />
</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>The Sportscar magazine doesn't know this, but Lisa is going to win the F125L National Championship this year. Lisa got a new motor, and a fourth rail on her kart this year; and more importantly, she tattooed the word "No Fear" on her forearm. She crushed the F125L favorites at the Toledo ProSolo, and she is getting even faster lately. Several of us were begging Lisa to run in F125L this year when she mentioned that she was going to run in open class. The excuse we used was she can win the Nationals in F125L, but the reality is we don't want to get crushed by Lisa, and the use of Jeff Gillooly's service for us is not an option. <b>(Projected Finish - 1st)</b></div><div></div><div></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">Brian Garfield - F125</span></div><div></div><div><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3490/3828222059_6bbea60c58.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3490/3828222059_6bbea60c58.jpg" style="cursor: hand; height: 333px; width: 500px;" /></a></div><div></div><div>Brian hasn't been karting much due to his busy working schedule; and he has been practicing his driving skills on his Turbo Diesel Jetta, which is just slightly faster than my 76 BMW 2002 historic clunker with 40HP, but getting 131 MPG on the downhill on I-95. So we will either see a fresh Brian, or a not so fresh Brian. If Brian is smart, he will make Mike Kline drive the van all the way to Lincoln, so he can sleep on the back seat of his van and relax. The National Champion chances doubles if he make Mike to mount and change all the tires; and the chances triples if he makes Mike to get all four karts to grid by himself without help. But that's unlikely... <b>(Projected Finish - 4th) </b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b>Danny Kao - F125</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3499/3828210001_ecf0fece84.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3499/3828210001_ecf0fece84.jpg" style="cursor: hand; height: 333px; width: 500px;" /></a><br />
</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>What does Danny Kao and Mark Liller have in common? They both drive until either the wheel falls off or the core showing, they run around on the course picking up cones like maniacs, amid in a different speed, and they both run in a very strong class (Mark is in F-Stock); but that's where the similarity ends. Unlike Mark who is getting faster and moving up in PAX, Danny has been moving down in PAX and constantly getting humiliated by the "Natural". Danny even came up with some lame excuse on going to see Neary's time trial to avoid the last AI autocross where he would be crushed by Edwin in order to protect his "Fastest Chinese guy in Gaithersburg" status. Nationals is not looking good for Danny, but he is ready to eat and buy souvenirs and blog. <b>(Projected Finish: 23rd)</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b>Frank Weichold - F125</b></div><div></div><div><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3454/3797049449_073403473c.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3454/3797049449_073403473c.jpg" style="cursor: hand; height: 333px; width: 500px;" /></a></div><div></div><div>Frank Weichold, aka "The Crazy German", is feared among the B-Stock guys. (So he claimed, but I don't see Shawn or Chike shaking their boots) Frank is going to test his "mad" skills at the Nationals in F125 this year. But the road to karting for Frank is long:</div><div><ul><li>Crack his rib on his first indoor karting session by Brian Garfield, who showed him "who is the boss" at the Red Bull turn.</li>
<li>Pull his back while lifting a kart from the ground to the stand, resulted in an MRI.</li>
<li>Complain about headaches after the first test and tune, where he finish 3 seconds back of the "Natural", who drove for the first time and only two runs.</li>
<li>Couldn't stop spining and knock over cones for the first three events. Prompted Julian to ban him from running the course.</li>
<li>Tried to sign up in A-Mod and F125L multiple times to avoid the class he will be running and blame the computer guy for bad programming.</li>
<li>Cutting practice short claiming his butt hurts, also resulted to another MRI.</li>
</ul></div><div>In Frank's defense, he is the oldest dude in F125 from the DC region at the Nationals this year, and his daughter is in medical school so she can medicate Frank when he needs it. But he is a crazy German, and a crazy German is always faster than an old Chinese guy. <b>(Projected Finish: 22nd)</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">This leads to my projected F125 National Champion of this year. Drum roll please.......</span></span></b></div><div><b><br />

</b></div><div><b>Mike Kline - F125</b></div><div><b><br />

</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>Mike hasn't touch a thing on his kart this year. Not a jet, spark plug, alignment, or tire pressure. I don't even think Mike even washed his racing suit this year. Mike always takes naps under the shade, chit chat with girls. And when the temperature gets hot, he goes into the timing trailer and sleep next to the timing writing pretending he is auditing. To sum up, Mike is the most lay back guy I know in autocross, and he is fast as Sxxx. (Oh, I can't say that because Ian told me not to) With Brian chauffeuring Mike and Brian setup the kart and the tire pressure <b>(PLUS JETTING!) </b>, Mike Kline with hot tires and a functional kart will be hard to beat. Plus since Mike is really lay back, he might just let me have his National Champion jacket. Size L for me, please... <b>(Projected Finish: 1st)</b></div><div><b><br />
